Eddie Murphy recalls 'SNL' 50th anniversary: 'Everybody was real old'

Eddie Murphy is reflecting on his return to his old stomping grounds.

The actor and comedian discussed his appearance at February's festivities celebrating 50 years of Saturday Night Live during a recent visit to The Jennifer Hudson Show. "It was a trip," Murphy said. "Because everybody was real old. Everybody was old."

Murphy was an SNL cast member from 1980 to 1984, and quickly became one of the show's buzziest alums as he launched his legendary film and standup careers off the back of his success in Studio 8H.

"I got on that show when I was 19 years old," Murphy recalled. "So I went back and I saw all these people 40 years later. It was just a trip. And it was a, how can I put it — I felt like I was part of something. That show was on for 50 years, you know, so it's this American institution. So when you're in the room, and you see all the different people that were part of the show, I had this really great feeling, like, 'Wow, I'm a part of this show!' It was a good feeling. I loved it."

Host Jennifer Hudson asked Murphy about the "Black Jeopardy" sketch, wherein he portrayed fellow SNL alum Tracy Morgan while standing next to the real Morgan, who was playing a contestant named Darius.

"I love Tracy," Murphy said. "I was one of the few people — not a lot of people can do Tracy. Yeah, I was like, 'Cool, obscure impressions!' You know what happens when you do an impression of somebody? Then people see you do it, then they do your impression of you doing it. Now a bunch of people do Tracy."

Hudson also asked Murphy about the special's final sketch, "Scared Straight," which also featured a pantsless Will Ferrell. "Did you expect him to come out there half-dressed like that?" Hudson inquired.

"Yeah, see, he didn't come to rehearsal," Murphy said of Ferrell. "So I saw him on air when he came out, and no, I didn't expect him to be dressed like that. So I'm holding it in the whole time. Very funny. He's another one that I love, Will Ferrell. Brilliant, so funny."

Murphy said Ferrell's unexpected partial nudity caused him to briefly break character. "I started laughing there," he said. "I start laughing all the time, you know, in the middle of stuff, and then we just go back and fix it."

Murphy continued, "I love that, when something makes you, you know, you can't hold it in, you gotta start laughing. And the audience likes it too. But the audience hates it — sometimes people do it, and they ain't really laughing, they be like, fake laughing, and the audience is like, 'He ain't really laughing.'"
