Donatella Versace steps down as Versace poaches chief creative officer from Miu Miu
Donatella Versace will pass the torch to Dario Vitale as Versace’s New Artistic Director after a 28-year reign leading the fashion giant, her brothers Gianni and Santo established in 1978.
The legendary designer will transition into the role of principal brand ambassador.
Versace announced that Dario Vitale will be taking the reins as the new artistic director. This milestone signifies a historical shift for the Italian fashion house.

Vitale's inaugural collection will be Versace’s first in its 47-year legacy not creatively spearheaded by either Gianni or Donatella Versace.
The family link between Versace and the Versaces will not be completely severed. Alongside Vitale's appointment, the house confirmed that Donatella will continue as principal brand ambassador.
Donatella commented on the succession, publicly reassuring her commitment to Versace as its strongest devotee. She also warmly welcomed Vitale, and said she is excited about seeing Versace through fresh perspectives.

Vitale, praised the unparalleled heritage of Versace and thanked Donatella for her trust in him. He further acknowledged the extraordinary brand that has shaped the fashion industry's history and voiced his ambition to contribute to Versace's future growth and global influence.
While the future direction of Versace remains uncertain, this announcement signifies a significant divergence from its past. This comes seven years after the Versace family and American group Capri sold their majority stake in Versace, with Donatella retaining her role as Versace’s chief creative officer under the deal.
Vitale's rise to the foremost creative role at Versace signals an exciting era for the fashion house. Under his direction at Miu Miu, he contributed to the house's impressive 93% growth in 2024.
Though it is still uncertain if Versace will be sold, its potential new owners will surely hope Vitale can transfer his influence to this new appointment.
