Doireann Garrihy's pregnancy secret was almost 'outed'

Published 13 hours ago3 minute read
Like every expecting mother, Doireann Garrihy swore everyone around her to secrecy before announcing her pregnancy to the public.

The 2FM star did her best to keep her little bundle of joy under wraps, but one keyboard warrior came close to ‘outing’ her exciting news.

During a chat with her sister Ailbhe on her podcast Doireann & Friends, the Dancing with the Stars host recalled: ‘When I hadn’t announced I was pregnant, one person kept writing to me on Instagram saying “I think you have news for your followers”.’

‘Ugh that is so annoying,’ Ailbhe interjected, sighing.

Doireann continued: ‘So when I got that message my brain went into overdrive and I just thought, “I’ve been seen in the hospital, I look pregnant, who have a I said it to that has maybe said to someone else?”. And this wasn’t like a faceless account, it was a totally normal woman in her 40s.’

‘I just don’t know what goes through people’s minds to send that,’ Ailbhe said, to which her sister said: ‘Exactly, this is the thing. You’ve had experiences like this before too, when people have been like, “Oh yeah I knew”, and you have no idea how they knew or found out.’

‘Surely women need to understand to just say nothing,’ Doireann said, and Ailbhe responded: ‘But even if you were spotted in the hospital, you could have been in there for multiple reasons.’

‘That is what I don’t get, there are many reasons why a woman might find themselves in a maternity hospital, it doesn’t automatically mean you are expecting,’ Doireann said.

The presenter admitted she always tried to be ‘so aware’ of the fact that she might bump into someone she knew or a fan while getting a scan.

‘You just have to act like you don’t see them and if you do see them just say, ‘How’s it going, how are you?’, but never ask why they are there,’ she said. ‘It should be a part of girl code.’

She shared her opinion that maternity hospital waiting rooms should have signs up, reminding people it’s a ‘confidential place’.

Uploading the clip from her chat with Ailbhe, a freshly-outraged Doireann wrote: ‘Since this week’s episode, so many have shared stories about being “outed” by someone who spotted them in a maternity hospital.

‘I think it is so wrong and wonder if some sort of etiquette should be formally introduced.’
