The football world is still struggling to come to terms with the tragic death of the Liverpool star, who lost his life on Thursday morning, July 3.

The forward, who was in the company of his brother, Andre Silva, perished after the tyre of the car they were travelling in burst, leading to a crash before it was engulfed in flames.

The accident happened along the A-52 road in the northwestern Spanish city of Cernadilla, Zamora.

Tributes have continued to flow in for the 28-year-old who had the world at his feet this season. His nine goals and four assists helped Liverpool win the Premier League in Arne Slot's debut season in England.

The former Wolves man then linked up with his Portuguese national teammates, where they beat Spain to win the UEFA Nations League.

Details of his last phone call have now come to the fore. Jota talked to the president of his boyhood club, Gondomar SC, Alvaro Cerqueira, over the phone.

"It was just after 10 pm last night [Thursday], we were on the phone and he was fine," he told JN.

Jota's accident happened at around 12.35 am.

"We spoke almost every week, and I know he was going through a happy moment. When Diogo needed to train during the off-season, he would ask to come here, and we would always make everything available."

Cerqueira also revealed that Jota's brother, Silva, used to train at Gondomar.

"His brother would usually come too, and they would both train. It is difficult to talk at a time like this, but what will remain is the image of two very humble people, who leave a huge void."

Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk has issued a heartbreaking tribute to his deceased teammate, calling him an 'unbelievable family man'.

"Man, I can't believe it, I don't wanna believe it. Absolutely devastated and in total disbelief. What a human being, what a player, but most importantly, what an unbelievable family man. You meant so much to all of us, and you always will! For your family to lose two sons, a husband, and a father is just unimaginable," he said on Instagram.

The towering Dutch defender vowed that the team would look after Jota's wife and the three children he has left behind.

"My heart is breaking for all of your beautiful family, for Rute and for your kids. I promise you that in these difficult times and beyond, we will always be there for your family."

In a separate report, doctors warned Diogo against flying following a recent lung surgery.

It was why the Liverpool star was travelling by road before the accident that claimed his life.

The two brothers were on their way to Santander, where they intended to take a ferry to Britain.
