Desmond Bane trade could create ripple effect, should the Pelicans blow it up?

Ladies and Gentlemen, the NBA offseason has officially made its first splash. The Memphis Grizzlies are trading Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic in exchange for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four 1st-round picks (2025, 2026, 2028, 2030) and a 2029 first-round pick swap. This massive deal puts Orlando in a position to compete for the top seed in the Eastern Conference next season.

Memphis is in an interesting spot. Right now, it's safe to say this move makes their roster worse. However, they now have the assets to go out and acquire a big-name star, as they now have ten first-round picks from this offseason to the 2030 offseason.

With this being the first trade of the offseason, it's important to note that this could set the tone for any other trades made this summer. The fact that a player like Bane, who at 26 years old has no All-Star appearances, fetched four firsts and a pick swap is unbelievable.

With Joe Dumars coming in as the new President of Basketball Operations this summer, the direction in which he takes the Pelicans hasn't yet been confirmed. However, seeing a move like this could be all he needs to start an all-out fire sale. No shade to Desmond Bane, he truly is a phenomenal player, but that return is bananas.

When other teams, especially ones in the Eastern Conference, see a move like this, they feel the need to counter it with an even bigger move. A guy like Herb Jones could fit in any contender's rotation. And if Bane netted this type of return, it's not wild to think the Pelicans could get five first-round picks for Herb.

For me, a trade like this also reopens the door to Zion Williamson rumors. I'm aware Dumars said, "He's (Zion) going to continue to be a focal point here as we go forward." But after seeing a move like this, the Pelicans need to have some tough internal conversations about moving on from Williamson.

He is already an established name in this league. Sure, he has dealt with his fair share of issues and injuries, but at 24, he is already a two-time All-Star and has a career average of 24.7 points per game. I could almost guarantee some team is willing to take a chance on him, just needing a change of scenery, and would probably give four or more first-round picks and young players to get him.

The first trade of this off-season is enormous and will set the tone for trades for the rest of the summer. If Desmond Bane can fetch a haul like this, the Pelicans owe it to themselves to explore every option, including the big red blow it up button.
