Delta clinches fifth consecutive victory at National Sports Festival
Delta State has once again cemented its status as Nigeria’s sporting powerhouse, emerging champions of the National Sports Festival for the fifth consecutive time.
The triumph was officially announced by Bukola Olopade, chairperson of the Main Organising Committee for the Gateway Games 2024, during Thursday’s closing ceremony in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Although the final medal tally has yet to be released due to the pending conclusion of the Table Tennis event, Delta State had already secured a commanding lead, making its overall victory indisputable.

The National Sports Festival, often referred to as Nigeria’s “mini-Olympics,” brings together athletes from across the country to compete in various sporting disciplines.
Delta’s consistent dominance in recent editions reflects years of sustained investment in sports development, athlete training, and youth empowerment programs.
Beyond the competition, this year’s festival also highlighted progress in gender inclusion in Nigerian sports.
The Nigeria Olympic Committee’s Women Commission presented special recognition trophies to Anambra and Kogi states, along with a team of Invited Junior Athletes, for their efforts in promoting equal participation of women within their contingents.
This move was widely applauded as a step toward bridging the gender gap in sports representation.
As the curtain falls on the Gateway Games 2024, attention now turns to Enugu State, which has been named the next host of the National Sports Festival.
Organisers have expressed optimism that Enugu will continue and expand upon the gender inclusion initiatives introduced this year.
The National Sports Festival not only showcases athletic talent but also fosters unity, diversity, and national pride.
