Death and Tributes for AFCON Winner Christian Chukwu

The Nigerian football community is mourning the loss of two icons: Charles Bassey and Christian Chukwu, both members of the Super Eagles team that won Nigeria's first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 1980. Their deaths, occurring on the same day, have cast a pall over the nation's football fraternity.

Charles Bassey, a former player for Calabar Rovers and coach for several Nigerian clubs, passed away on Saturday, April 12, after a prolonged illness. Bassey's health issues stemmed from a car accident in 1986, which caused a nerve root compression in his spinal cord. Despite undergoing surgery funded by the Femi Otedola Foundation in 2021, Bassey's condition gradually worsened, leaving him unable to walk for some time. He managed teams including Akwa United, Wikki Tourists, BCC Lions, Flash Flamingos, and Mobil Pegasus during his active days before his health challenges.

Bassey's contribution to Nigerian football extended beyond his playing career. He coached several local clubs, including BCC Lions of Gboko, where he is credited with saving the team from relegation after returning from a coaching training in Brazil, before the car accident that would later affect his health. His experience and knowledge of the game were invaluable to the development of young players.

Christian Chukwu, the captain of the 1980 AFCON-winning team and a former coach of the Super Eagles, also passed away on Saturday at the age of 74. Chukwu, fondly known as 'Chairman,' was a towering figure in Nigerian football, both as a player and a leader. He captained the national team to its first major international triumph and later coached the Super Eagles to a third-place finish at the 2004 AFCON tournament in Tunisia.

In 2019, Chukwu was diagnosed with prostate cancer, which affected his legs. Femi Otedola, a Nigerian billionaire, stepped in to provide financial support for his medical treatment in the United Kingdom. Otedola's intervention allowed Chukwu to receive comprehensive care and a new lease of life, according to the businessman. Otedola mourned the loss of the iconic Chukwu, and reminisced about his contribution to unifying the nation through football.

The deaths of Bassey and Chukwu have been met with widespread grief and tributes from prominent figures in Nigerian football and beyond. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu eulogized Chukwu for his passion, discipline, and commitment to national pride. The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) also expressed its condolences, acknowledging the immense contributions of both players to the nation's footballing history.

With Charles Bassey's passing, the number of deceased members from the 1980 AFCON-winning squad has risen to nine. Other fallen heroes include Best Ogedegbe, Moses Effiong, Okechukwu Isima, Tunde Bamidele, Aloysius Atugbu, Mudashiru Lawal, and Martins Eyo. Their memories will forever be cherished by Nigerian football fans.

The legacies of Charles Bassey and Christian Chukwu will endure as symbols of dedication, leadership, and excellence in Nigerian football. Their contributions to the nation's sporting achievements will never be forgotten.
