Dawn Staley Gives Caitlin Clark a New Title Before Fever-Sky Game

Published 13 hours ago2 minute read

The Indiana Fever take on the Chicago Sky in the WNBA's first network primetime game of the season on June 6.

With all the hype surrounding Fever guard Caitlin Clark going up against Sky forward Angel Reese, the game was moved from the Wintrust Arena to the United Center, the largest NBA area in the league.

This marks the second Fever-Sky matchup of the season. Clark and the Fever blew out Chicago 93-58 in their season opener at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

However, Clark is not playing in Saturday's game as she continues to recover from a left quadriceps strain suffered on May 24 against the New York Liberty. The Fever are also without their head coach Stephanie White, who's absent due to personal reasons.

Fever assistant coach Austin Kelly will take over for White in her absence During the pregame show on CBS, legendary basketball coach Dawn Staley was asked what she'll be locked in on during the Fever-Sky showdown.

Despite the league's reigning Rookie of the Year not playing, Staley remains focused on Clark. "I'll be locked in on Caitlin Clark as assistant coach. Animated Caitlin Clark assistant. She’s probably going to be saying, ‘Give Aliyah [Boston] the ball."

"Coach what are you gonna have your eyes locked in on early"

Fans couldn't help but laugh at Staley's blunt response. One person posted, "Even Dawn Staley talking about she going to be looking at Caitlin Clark on the sidelines ."

The Sky lost their first four games of the season before stacking two wins against the Dallas Stars (1-7). With Clark out, the Fever (3-5) have gone 1-2.

The 23-year-old guard remains incredibly animated while cheering on her teammates from the sidelines and criticizing refs' calls. "I think you can learn the game of basketball the same amount," she said of being a spectator.

"You turn on the TV and watch the NBA. Or you watch other WNBA games, that’s the best way to learn basketball – just watch and absorb it. It’s the same when I’m not active, too."
