'Daughter of a Murder' Comment: 'I'm very disappointed' - Speaker Bagbin slams MPs
Bagbin (L) says 3 MPs have been indentified for the 'Daughter of a Murder' comment against Zanetor
Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, during proceedings of Parliament on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, gave an update on the investigation into the ‘daughter of a murderer’ remark against the Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings.
During his remarks on the floor, the Speaker of Parliament lambasted the Members of Parliament for failing to help identify their colleague who made the comment.
He disclosed that the investigation has identified three legislators who were sitting on the Minority side of the House as the main suspects in the investigation.
“The investigations are still not concluded. But to be frank with you, I am very disappointed with all of you, that a member seated in this House with all colleagues around, and no single colleague can pinpoint the member who uttered those words.
"Even those of you sitting together, the three of you that have been identified. The zone is on the three. Get this notice,” he said.
The Speaker went on to castigate the members of the Majority Caucus in particular for not helping identify the person who made the comment.
He also expressed surprise that the cameras in the House had not captured the person who made the comment.
“Majority members, with your numbers watching the Minority, you are telling me that none of you can identify the person who spoke?... Honourable Members, the person spoke not once, not once, but twice. The Minority Leader, on his feet, turned to look in that direction. And none of you can identify the person who spoke.
"I'm very disappointed. What is even shocking is that, with all the cameras and the CCTV, none could capture the person who spoke. Honourable Members, these are serious matters. And when they are properly brought to me, I take action,” he said.
On Tuesday, February 4, 2025, an unidentified member of the Minority side hurled a deeply derogatory remark at Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, referring to her as the "daughter of a murderer" and ordering her to sit down during parliamentary proceedings.
Another unknown MP, believed to be from the Minority side, followed up, claiming, "But there is evidence that her father killed people."
The incident attracted widespread public condemnation, with some NDC members demanding the identification and punishment of the yet-to-be identified MP behind the remark.
The Speaker subsequently set up a committee to investigate the matter.
