Bagbin slams MPs over silence on 'Daughter of a Murderer' insult
Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has expressed deep disappointment in Members of Parliament (MPs) for failing to identify the colleague who made the offensive “daughter of a murderer” comment directed at Korle Klottey MP, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings.
Addressing the House on Tuesday, May 27, Bagbin said investigations into the February 4 incident were still ongoing, but he was visibly frustrated that no MP had come forward, even though the remark was made openly in the chamber.
“The investigations are still not concluded, but to be frank with you, I am very disappointed with all of you,” the Speaker said. “A member seated in this House with all colleagues around uttered those words, and no single colleague can pinpoint who it was. Even among the three of you seated together — the zone is on the three — none can say who said it.”
Bagbin directed particular criticism at the Majority side of the House, questioning how none of them could identify the individual despite being seated with a clear view of the Minority caucus.
“The majority members, with your numbers watching the minority — you are telling me none of you can identify the person who spoke? The person spoke not once, but twice, and even the Minority Leader turned in that direction, yet still no identification?” he asked.
The Speaker added that what was even more concerning was the apparent failure of the House’s surveillance and CCTV systems to capture the offending MP.
“These are serious matters,” Bagbin stressed. “When they are properly brought to me, I take action. Shouts and noise will not compel me to act — you know what to do.”
The incident occurred during a heated parliamentary debate on the 60th anniversary of the death of Dr. J.B. Danquah. While Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin was speaking, a male MP was heard shouting: “Daughter of a murderer, sit down! Daughter of a murderer, sit down!”
The comment, widely understood to have been directed at Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings — daughter of the late President Jerry John Rawlings — drew public outrage amid calls for disciplinary action.
Despite intense media scrutiny and widespread condemnation, the identity of the MP behind the insult remains unknown.
