D’Angelo Russell is quickly becoming one of the hottest names ahead of NBA free agency. The 29-year-old point guard wrapped up the season with the Brooklyn Nets, but signs now point to a possible move out West.

Reports suggest the Dallas Mavericks are preparing a two-year, $12 million offer, making Russell one of the top players to watch as the market opens.

According to a report from NBA insiders Marc Stein posted on X, D'Angelo Russell is expected to sign a two-year contract of $ 12 million with the Dallas Mavericks when free agency begins. Russell, whom the Lakers chose over others everywhere in 2015, spent the end of last season with the Brooklyn Nets.

He was acquired by the team in a midseason trade in December 2024, with the Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton deal. In all, Russell appeared in 29 games for Brooklyn in the 2024–25 season, averaging 12.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 5.6 assists.D’Angelo Russell made $18.7 million with his last salary, but perhaps could take less in Dallas for a more contract - motivated offer. The Mavericks, who are coached by Jason Kidd, are reportedly seeking to cover the gap left by Kyrie Irving, who suffered a torn ACL in March 2025.

As per ESPN’s Shams Charania, Dallas has a $5.7 million taxpayer midlevel exception, which can help them bring in a veteran like Russell (according to ESPN).

On June 26, the Mavericks made headlines by selecting Cooper Flagg as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. While Flagg is a major addition, Dallas still lacks a true floor general for the start of the new season. With Irving recovering, Russell could take the lead point guard role from day one.Russell has previously shown good chemistry with stars like Anthony Davis during his earlier time with the Lakers, and he could bring similar value to Dallas. In a recent interview with Erik Slater of ClutchPoints, Russell shared his wish to stay in Brooklyn, saying:“Being somewhere familiar is something I’m prioritizing,” he said. “What Coach Jordi and Sean are building is something I’ve seen before.”But with Brooklyn shifting focus to a younger roster selecting four guards in the 2025 draft, Russell’s future there seems uncertain. Also Read: Meet the AI superstars who are making more than NBA stars
