The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested one Helen Kayodefor faking her own kidnap.

Police said she was later found to be with her boyfriend.

Helen, a student of Ekiti State University (EKSU), was accused of falsely raised an alarm that she was kidnapped along Iworoko/Ado-Ekiti road, taken to an uncompleted building and held hostage by unknown armed men.

Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Sunday Abutu, who announced the arrest, said last Friday, Helen Kayode, sent a disturbing message to her sister that she boarded a wrong vehicle between Ado-Ekiti and Iworoko-Ekiti road and was kidnapped.

Abutu said the student said she was kept and held hostage in a building surrounded with bush.

He said this information activated serious panic in the state, especially within Iworoko-Ekiti and Ado-Ekiti metropolis, as it went viral on the social media, causing some reactions that undermine the security and peaceful atmosphere currently being enjoyed in the state.

Abutu said it was later discovered during investigation that she was not kidnapped but rathergave false information, as she was with her boyfriend all through the night of that same day before travelling to Lagos to meet her parents.

“The suspect confessed during investigation that she sent out the false information to enable her stay back in Ado-Ekiti to celebrate her birthday with the boyfriend, saying her parents were forcing her to return to Lagos against her wish before the birthday.”

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Joseph Eribo, while condemning the act, warned against giving false information, especially those that can cause unnecessary apprehension in the society, as those found wanting will be made to face the wrath of the law.
