A High Court sitting in Obiozara, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi has dismissed a forgery and impersonation case against members of a Ward Executive committee of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Executive Committee of Oguduokwor Ward in Onicha local government area had in October 2024 expelled the South-East National Vice Chairman of the PDP, Mr Ali Odefa.

Odefa, in October 2024, upon his suspension, allegedly connived with some operatives of the Nigerian Police in the state and arrested Sunday Idika, Njoku Nwagu and Obinna Chukwu, all PDP officials.

Also in the arrest include the former state acting Chairman of the party, Dr Augustine Nwazunku.

Nwazunku was subsequently arraigned before the court over forgery, impersonation and being members of a secret cult group.

The Presiding Judge, Justice G. N. Ugbala on Wednesday dismissed the case.

Ugbala decried the inability of both Odefa and the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) to diligently prosecute the matter over lack of evidence.

The Lead Counsel to the PDP, Mr Mudi Erhenede, who moved the motion for the dismissal of the case, said it was obvious that there was no evidence to back up the accusations leveled against the PDP officials.”

“Thank God our motion was granted by Ugbala and the case had been struck out and the four defendants have been discharged,” Erhenede stated.

NAN also recalls that the defendants were initially remanded in Abakaliki prison but later transferred to Afikpo prison, where they were re-arraigned before Justice G.N. Ugbala of the state High Court.

Another lawyer to the party officials, Mr Friday Nwazunku said it was obvious that neither Mr. Odefa nor the DPP had any case against the accused.

According to him, it was just a case of misuse of the police to intimidate people in the name of politics.

Meanwhile, counsels to Odefa were absent in court.

The PDP had on Feb. 27 re-elected Odefa as the South East National Vice Chairman of the PDP for the second term despite court affirming his expulsion from the party.
