West Iredell High School celebrated the school’s 50th anniversary on Friday night by honoring one of the largest classes of Warriors.
More than 180 seniors officially became WIHS alumni during a ceremony attended by Iredell-Statesville Schools Superintendent Jeff James, school board member Ronda Hoke, and Director of CTE Tim Woody.
Principal Benjamin Johnson congratulated the Class of 2025 and encouraged the new grads to make an impact on the world.
“On this 50th anniversary, it’s more than a graduation, it’s a legacy, a turning point, a launch pad,” he said. “There will be mountaintops and valleys, but enjoy the ride.”
Johnson was overcome with emotion as a class representative presented him with a personalized Bible signed by seniors.
The night’s theme was about staying true to yourself and making a difference.
Salutatorian Andrew McCarthy thanked God and quoted President Dwight D. Eisenhower: “The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.
“The eyes of the world are on us watching what Gen Z Class of 2025 have to offer,” he added.
McCarthy encouraged his classmates, saying they could handle life’s challenges.
“Wherever we go, we will march there together, and whatever you do, do it with your head held high.”
Valedictorian Lance Bowman thanked Jesus Christ and encouraged his classmates to live a life of service.
“The most valuable and precious gift you can ever give someone is yourself,” Bowman said. “You have blessed someone’s life by giving them yourself.”
He stressed the importance of being kind to others and helping them succeed while being true to yourself.
“Steve Jobs said, ‘Your time is limited. Don’t waste it living someone else’s life.’ ”
