Chris Desiderio leads Garden City to Nassau Class AA baseball championship

Two Nassau baseball championship series were pushed to a deciding Game 3 earlier in the day at Farmingdale State.

With Chris Desiderio taking the mound, Garden City was confident that a third game would not be necessary in its series.

Desiderio struck out nine and allowed one earned run in 6 1/3 innings to lead the No. 2 Trojans to a title-clinching 8-5 win over No. 1 Bellmore JFK in Game 2 of the Nassau Class AA championship series Friday night.

“He’s been outstanding all year. He’s a Long Island champion football player, so the moment’s not gonna be too big for him,” coach Dave Izzo said. “When he needed to make a pitch, he did. He’s a bulldog.”

It’s Garden City’s first county title since 2021 and sixth overall.

Desiderio got the Trojans on the board in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly to plate Skylar Lang. Evan Cabral scored on a single by Jimmy Trocchio, who scored on a single by Kyle Walsh to give Garden City a 3-0 lead.

In Thursday’s Game 1, Garden City scored five runs in the first inning of its 6-4 win.

“They were up first today, so I knew I had to attack them and keep them off the board,” Desiderio said. “We came out firing just like yesterday, got up 3-0 and I knew we had insurance there and we would get more… I just wanted to keep it cool, calm and collected and keep throwing strikes.”

Eli Lowenstein drove in Frankie Stella on a sacrifice fly in third to cut the deficit to 3-1 for Bellmore JFK (22-6).

Desiderio walked to start the bottom of the fifth, stole second, tagged up to third on a flyout to left and scored on a wild pitch. Mateo Fortney and Shea Burns were each hit by a pitch with two outs and Will Jewell floated a single to shallow left centerfield to plate Fortney. Burns collided with the Cougars’ third baseman while rounding third and was awarded home plate to give Garden City a 6-1 lead.

Cabral scored on an error and Desiderio scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Walsh in the sixth to give the Trojans and 8-1 lead.

“Those runs were huge,” Izzo said. “That last out is always a tough one. It was huge that we kept pouring it on.”

An error extended the top of the seventh and Dylan Babek and Vito Manning scorched consecutive RBI doubles to bring the Cougars closer. But Walsh squeezed the final out in right field and the Trojans stormed the field to celebrate.

“I love this team. I just want to keep playing with them,” Desiderio said.

Garden City (23-4) will face either East Islip or East Hampton in the Long Island championship/regional semifinal at 4:30 p.m. on June 5 at Farmingdale State.

Said Desiderio: “Can’t wait.”
