Chinese nationals arrested for illegal mining may face prison sentences of up to 25 years - Dr Bissiw-Kotei
Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund (MDF), Dr Hannah Louisa Bissiw-Kotei
The Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund (MDF), Dr. Hannah Louisa Bissiw-Kotei, has stated categorically that all Chinese nationals arrested in connection with illegal mining will be dealt with in accordance with Ghanaian law.
She noted that the laws of Ghana prohibit foreigners from engaging in illegal mining activities.
Dr. Bissiw-Kotei explained that foreign nationals involved in illegal mining are subject to prosecution under the Minerals and Mining Act, which prescribes imprisonment, fines, and deportation after the completion of sentences.
She further emphasised that foreigners found guilty of such offences could face sentences ranging from 20 to 25 years, in addition to being deported after serving their time.
Her statement was in response to a question regarding the fate of Chinese nationals arrested by her anti-galamsey task force in connection with illegal mining activities.
“The laws of Ghana will deal ruthlessly with Chinese nationals engaged in illegal mining,” she stated.
“The Minerals and Mining Act stipulates that all foreigners arrested and convicted for illegal mining shall serve a minimum of ten years and a maximum of twenty-five years in prison. They will also be fined and repatriated after serving their sentences.”
She appealed to Ghanaians to support the fight against illegal mining, stressing that it poses a serious threat to human life, national security, and the environment.
Responding to those who have described her recent anti-galamsey campaign as a mere content-creating exercise, she expressed disappointment, emphasising that the ongoing fight is dangerous and should not be trivialised or reduced to social media entertainment.
