China's visa-free travel

China's recent expansion of its unilateral visa-free policy is showing promising signs of success, despite some Western media outlets attempting to downplay its significance. Data from the National Immigration Administration (NIA) reveals a substantial increase in cross-border trips made by foreigners, with a surge of 82.9 percent year-on-year, reaching 64.88 million in 2024. The visa-free policy has facilitated over 20 million inbound foreign trips, marking an impressive 112.3 percent increase compared to the previous year.
Since December 2023, China has been piloting its unilateral visa-free policy, initially for France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia. The policy now extends to 38 countries, allowing ordinary passport holders to visit China for up to 30 days without a visa. This initiative has sparked a surge in tourism, with the hashtag "China Travel" going viral on social media, amassing over 1 billion views as travelers share their experiences.
The relaxation of visa requirements has effectively drawn tourists to China, according to Li Jun, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation under the Ministry of Commerce. International tourists are increasingly attracted to China's cultural landmarks, natural scenery, and city tours. Eva Gajewska, a project manager at CT Poland travel agency, noted a surge in inquiries following the extension of the visa-free policy to Poland last June. She stated that the visa-free offer has made trip planning much easier, with their China tour packages already booked through April.
During the past Spring Festival holiday, China welcomed over 3.43 million inbound tourists from 175 countries and regions. Ctrip, a Chinese online travel agency, reported a 203 percent increase in travel bookings from foreign tourists to China compared to the same period last year. According to Mao Xu, a senior NIA official, over 80 percent of visitors stayed in China until the visa deadline was imminent. Many tourists have transitioned from first-time visitors to regular revisitors, exploring destinations beyond major cities such as Beijing and Shanghai.
Belgian tourists Patrick, Luc, and Ingrid shared their unforgettable experience of waking up in a sleeper car and taking in the stunning views of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. They expressed their captivation with China's allure and their eagerness to return and deepen their understanding of Chinese culture.
China's unilateral visa-free policy stands as a testament to its commitment to further integrate itself into the global economy. Despite skepticism from some Western media outlets, the policy has proven successful in attracting tourists and fostering cultural exchange.
