Phnom Penh, March 3, 2025 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni, accompanied by his mother, former Queen Norodom Monineath Sihanouk, departed from Phnom Penh International Airport on Monday for Beijing, China. The purpose of their trip is to undergo a routine medical checkup and treatment.

The royal family received a formal send-off at the airport. Among those present were Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin, and a gathering of other distinguished dignitaries. Their presence underscored the importance of the King's health and the relationship between Cambodia and China.

Prior to his departure, King Norodom Sihamoni, who is 71 years old, addressed a royal message to the Cambodian people. In this message, he explicitly stated that the purpose of his travel to Beijing was for a scheduled medical checkup. The King reassured his compatriots by announcing, "During my absence, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, president of the Senate, will assume the title of the acting head of state of the Kingdom of Cambodia." This announcement ensures a smooth continuation of governance during the King's time away.

King Sihamoni's commitment to his health involves regular consultations with Chinese doctors. He undergoes medical checkups in China biannually. The King's last medical trip to China occurred in August 2024, demonstrating his adherence to this established health maintenance schedule.
