China Responds to Claims of Chinese Soldiers Fighting for Russia in Ukraine

Recent reports indicate a developing international incident involving Chinese nationals allegedly participating in the conflict in Ukraine on the Russian side. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asserted that Ukrainian forces captured two Chinese citizens fighting for the Russian army in the eastern Donetsk region. Zelenskyy conveyed this information via Telegram, posting a video purportedly showing one of the captured individuals along with associated documents, bank cards, and personal data.
Zelenskyy further claimed that these two individuals are not isolated cases, stating, "We have information that there are many more such Chinese citizens in the occupying forces." He has instructed Ukraine’s foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, to seek an official response from Beijing, viewing this development as a signal that Russian President Vladimir Putin intends to prolong the war. Zelenskyy emphasized the need for a response from the U.S., Europe, and other nations seeking peace.
In response to these allegations, a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry stated that China is verifying the information with the Ukrainian side. The spokesperson reiterated the Chinese government's consistent advice to its nationals to avoid conflict zones and refrain from involvement in armed conflicts or participation in military operations.
Adding to the complexity, another spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Lin Jian, refuted the claims, describing them as "totally unfounded." Addressing a press conference in Beijing, Lin asserted that China has played a constructive role in resolving the Ukraine crisis politically.
These developments occur against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has been ongoing for over three years. Ukraine has received significant military and financial support from Western allies. While there have been reports of foreign fighters on both sides, including North Korean troops fighting for Russia and numerous foreign volunteers serving with Ukrainian forces, the alleged involvement of Chinese nationals has introduced a new dimension to the conflict.
The captured individuals are reportedly in the custody of Ukraine’s SBU security service. The situation remains fluid, with international observers closely monitoring the responses from both China and Ukraine.
