Chace Crawford Was Typecast as the 'CW Pretty Boy' After 'Gossip Girl'
18 years after the release of “Gossip Girl,” Chace Crawford has spoken about how playing Nate Archibald affected the start of his career.
In a recent interview with the “Good Guys” podcast, Crawford spoke about how he was typecast in roles similar to his performance as the Upper East Side’s golden boy, who is one of the love interests for both leading female characters, Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) and Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester), throughout the series. “I felt like I was in the wilderness for years after ‘Gossip Girl,’ because as big of a show as it was, coming off of it as a still young guy, [I felt like], ‘Oh, that’s not cool anymore,’” said Crawford. “I’m in this jail of the CW pretty boy who has no range.”
Crawford elaborated on how fortunate he was to work on “Gossip Girl,” but maintained that the years after the show’s success were difficult. “It was not lost on me, how difficult after those four years of some false starts on some TV shows, it could be difficult to find another thing. I was really, really appreciative when this happened … after being on something like ‘Gossip Girl.’ [It’s] not that I took it for granted, it was so fresh and I was so young, that by the end of it, you inevitably have taken some of it for granted.”
Crawford also spoke about the filming of “The Boys,” which has been filming its fifth and final season, and how working on the series offered a new start to his career. “It was great. I was so happy to have another job that I was excited about and that the character was so different from anything that I had done before.”
