Cannes Film Festival 2025: Official Selection Lineup and Details

The 78th Cannes Film Festival is poised to be a star-studded affair, with the official selection announced and anticipation building for the event, which will run from May 13 to 24. This year's festival boasts a diverse lineup, featuring both established auteurs and emerging talents, all vying for the prestigious Palme d'Or and other coveted awards.
Among the familiar names set to compete are Wes Anderson with "The Phoenician Scheme," Richard Linklater with "Nouvelle Vague," and Ari Aster with "Eddington." Julia Ducournau, a former Palme d'Or winner, returns with "Alpha," adding to the excitement in the Competition section. Notably, Amelie Bonin's debut film, "Leave One Day," will open the festival, marking a rare instance of a first-time filmmaker being given this honor.
The Un Certain Regard section will showcase directorial debuts from actors Scarlett Johansson with "Eleanor the Great" and Harris Dickinson with "Urchin." Johansson's film stars June Squibb as a woman who finds an unexpected connection with a teenager after moving to New York City. Dickinson's "Urchin" focuses on a homeless man's struggle to reintegrate into society in London.
Out of Competition, Tom Cruise will make a splash with "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning," while Rebecca Zlotowski's "Vie Privée," starring Jodie Foster, also promises to draw attention. Robert De Niro will receive the festival's honorary Palme d'Or, and Juliette Binoche will preside over the jury.
Thierry Frémaux, the festival's artistic director, revealed that a record 2,909 submissions were received this year. While 68% of the films are directed by men, six female directors are in competition for the Palme d'Or. Speculation remains about potential late additions to the lineup, with films like Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest,” Terrence Malick’s “The Way of the Wind” and Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut “The Chronology of Water” still possibly in the mix.
The festival will also include Cannes Premiere, Special Screenings, and Midnight Screenings sections, featuring works from directors such as Fatih Akin, Kirill Serebrennikov, and Bono with his documentary "Stories of Surrender."
