Cameroon U16 Women's Team Qualifies for AfroBasket

The Young Lionesses of Cameroon have achieved a historic first by qualifying for the FIBA U16 Women’s AfroBasket. Their journey to this milestone involved dominating performances against the Central African Republic in the Zone 4 qualifiers. In the initial match, Cameroon triumphed with a score of 103–12, highlighted by Shanice Mbaha's game-high 26 points. The subsequent game solidified their qualification, as the host team secured an 84–22 victory, earning them a spot in the FIBA AfroBasket U16 Women’s Championship in Kigali, Rwanda.

Team captain Shanice Mbaha was honored as the Most Valuable Player for her outstanding contribution, including scoring 21 points in the second game. Mbaha, a player for the local club FAP and a former member of the Cameroon U18 team that achieved third place in 2024, expressed her excitement about being part of this historic achievement. She conveyed her pride in her team's efforts throughout the qualifiers, emphasizing their determination to represent their country despite facing only one opponent. Looking ahead to the Final Round, Shanice voiced her hopes for a medal, ideally gold, and expressed confidence in her team's ability to contend for the championship with the support of their coaches.

Additionally, Cameroon secured a place in the 2025 FIBA U16 AfroBasket through impressive victories in the Zone 4 qualifiers held in Douala, marking their first appearance in the tournament's final round since its inception in 2009. Competing against the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo for the available spot, Cameroon demonstrated resolve and a strong desire to succeed. They clinched victories in both games, defeating the Central African Republic 84–57 and DR Congo 90–70. DR Congo managed a win against the Central African Republic with a score of 80-73, securing second place.

Cameroon's point guard, Nolan Ngangmeni, received the MVP award. Ngangmeni, born on April 11, 2009, and currently playing for Saint-Charles Charenton Saint-Maurice Basket-ball in France, scored 16 points in the first game and 23 in the second. Cameroon is set to join eleven other countries in the competition for the title, currently held by Guinea. The 2025 FIBA U16 AfroBasket is scheduled to take place in Kigali, Rwanda, in September.
