Flutterwave Expands Licensed Operations in Cameroon

Flutterwave, Africa’s leading financial technology company, has officially expanded its digital payment services to Cameroon, securing a Payment Service Provider license from the Central Bank of Central African States (BEAC). This strategic move, achieved through a technical partnership with Ecobank, signifies a major step in Flutterwave’s ambitious mission to unify Africa’s fragmented payment landscape and deepen its footprint across the continent, particularly in Francophone Africa, a market often underserved in fintech growth stories.
The new license positions Flutterwave as one of the few fintechs authorized to operate in Cameroon, allowing it to offer a comprehensive suite of digital payment solutions to businesses and individuals alike. These services enable businesses of all sizes—from small local shops, boutiques in Yaoundé, and restaurants in Douala to large corporations and global entities like e-commerce or streaming companies—to securely accept payments, make payouts, and manage financial operations with ease. Payments can be processed through popular methods such as mobile money, cards, and bank transfers, without requiring significant infrastructure investment from local businesses.
Specific use cases highlight the versatility of Flutterwave’s platform. Small businesses can generate payment links shareable via social platforms like WhatsApp or Instagram. Enterprises can issue digital invoices, manage vendor payments, and access a unified dashboard for all transactions. Global firms can collect payments from Cameroonian customers in local currencies, manage settlements, and issue refunds while ensuring full compliance with local regulations. The platform also offers robust reporting tools, fraud management capabilities, and localized support, simplifying previously complex financial processes for businesses entering Central Africa.
Olugbenga ‘GB’ Agboola, Founder and CEO of Flutterwave, emphasized the strategic importance of this expansion, stating, “Cameroon holds a central place in the future of Africa’s digital economy, and we’re proud to play a part in unlocking its potential. By offering secure, compliant, and accessible payment solutions, we’re creating opportunities for businesses of all sizes, from local merchants to global brands, to grow and thrive. Our presence here is not just about technology; it’s about long-term partnership, trust, and enabling prosperity across Central Africa.” Bode Aregbesola, Senior Vice President for Sales, West Africa, reiterated this commitment, noting that Flutterwave’s solutions are built to support the realities of running a business in Africa, enabling secure and scalable operations.
This regulatory approval in Cameroon is part of Flutterwave’s broader strategy to secure country-specific licenses across Africa, aiming to build trust with regulators, businesses, and consumers while overcoming past challenges in markets like Kenya. Over the past year, the company has achieved other significant regulatory milestones, including a Payment System license from the Bank of Zambia, an Enhanced Payment Service Provider license in Ghana, and a Payment Systems Operator license from the Bank of Uganda.
Founded in Nigeria in 2016, Flutterwave has rapidly expanded its operations, now supporting payments in over 30 African countries, connecting thousands of businesses to their customers across borders. The company powers transactions for global entities such as Uber, Microsoft, Booking.com, and Netflix, and has processed hundreds of millions of transactions exceeding tens of billions of dollars. With its unicorn status, Flutterwave continues to drive financial inclusion and facilitate seamless transactions, making it easier for businesses in Cameroon and those entering the market to get paid, pay others, and unlock new growth opportunities, thus reinforcing its mission to unify Africa’s fragmented payments landscape.
