Caitlin Clark Leads Indiana Fever to Victory Over Liberty, Ending Their Perfect Season

The New York Liberty's impressive 9-0 undefeated streak came to an end on Saturday afternoon as the Indiana Fever, spearheaded by the return of star guard Caitlin Clark, secured a decisive 102-88 victory at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The highly anticipated matchup saw Clark make a triumphant comeback after missing five games due to a quad injury sustained against the very same Liberty team three weeks prior.
Clark's return was nothing short of spectacular, especially in the first half. Despite being sidelined for an extended period, she showed no signs of rust, lighting up the scoreboard with 25 points in the first half alone—a new career high for any half. She was particularly dominant from beyond the arc, sinking six of her first nine three-pointers, including a remarkable Reggie Miller-esque stretch where she hit three consecutive triples in just 38 seconds. This offensive explosion helped the Fever take a 53-50 lead into halftime, despite the Liberty initially leading by as many as 11 points in the first quarter.
The game was characterized by significant scoring runs. New York opened the second half with nine unanswered points, but Indiana quickly countered with an explosive 19 consecutive points, extending into a wild 25-3 run that gave them their largest lead of the day, up by 16. The Liberty then staged a 14-2 run to cut the deficit to four, and later to three points. However, the Fever responded once more, embarking on a 17-4 run to reclaim a 16-point advantage, effectively sealing their victory.
While Clark's second-half scoring was more subdued, adding seven points in the third quarter and going scoreless in the fourth, her overall performance was pivotal. She finished with an impressive 32 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists, just shy of a triple-double. Her seven three-pointers tied a career high. The Fever's collective effort in long-range shooting was historic, as they drained a franchise-record 17 three-pointers. Key contributions also came from Lexie Hull, Damiris Dantas, Sydney Colson, and Sophie Cunningham, who combined for seven of 11 three-pointers, and Kelsey Mitchell, who chipped in 22 points.
For the New York Liberty, the loss marked their first of the season. They were notably without Jonquel Jones due to an ankle injury, which impacted their firepower. Despite the loss, Sabrina Ionescu led all scorers with 34 points, complemented by Breanna Stewart, contributing to 54 combined points for the duo. However, the Liberty struggled from deep, shooting just 20.7% from beyond the arc, and their bench managed only 12 points compared to Indiana's 20. Post-game, Ionescu acknowledged the Fever's strong performance, stating, “Basketball is a game of runs... I think we gave [Caitlin] too many easy ones, she has great range.” She also expressed happiness for Clark's healthy return.
In a notable moment of the game, Liberty guard Natasha Cloud achieved a historic milestone, climbing to ninth all-time in the WNBA's assist list. With her five assists in the game, Cloud surpassed Cappie Pondexter's tally of 1,578, reaching 1,583 career assists. With her current average of 6.1 assists per game, she is on track to soon overtake Candace Parker, who holds the eighth spot with 1,634 assists.
The victory improved the Indiana Fever's season record to 5-5. The team is now 3-2 with Clark on the floor, compared to a 2-3 record in her absence. The two losses with Clark playing have come by a combined three points, indicating their competitiveness. The Fever are set to host the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday, while the Liberty will return to New York to face the Atlanta Dream. Following her stellar performance, Clark celebrated on Instagram with a post captioned, "good to be back," which garnered support, including a comment from her longtime boyfriend, Connor McCaffery.
