Speaking to, Margaret's niece, identified as Dorca,s shared that 11-year-old Moses Musalwa was born on January 14, 2014, and initially, he was a healthy boy meeting all his milestones without any problems.
"His mother has mental illness and could not take good care of him so that meant that there was no one to feed him well and he stayed without food for long hours," said Musalwa's aunt.
"Additionally, he used to sit in his own waste for hours and there was no one to take of his other needs; that is how he started looking like this. Initially, we thought it was cerebral palsy, but the doctor has told us he suffers from protein energy malnutrition and mineral deficiency," she said.
According to the hospital documents presented by Musalwa's guardians, the little boy was also convulsing upon admission.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, malnutrition is the imbalance between the nutrients that help the body to function. One can present undernutrition or overnutrition as well.
One can get malnutrition from an overall lack of calories, or have a protein, vitamin or mineral deficiency. A person may also have more excess calories which their body may not know how to use.
Moses was admitted to the hospital on March 11, 2025, and discharged on April 4, 2025. As if Musalwa's problem were not enough, a doctor in Bungoma accidentally broke one of his legs because it was very brittle.
According to his grandmother, she was stranded with the young boy at the AIC Kijabe Mission Hospital, and they were supposed to pay KSh 210,000.
"They later let us go as they desperately need the bed. However, Musalwa still needs to undergo treatment and eat well to become a normal child again, and that means we need to honour the next visist set for Thursday, April 26, and that can only be done if we have paid the bill," said his aunt Dorcas.
"The kid is under the care of his grandmother since his mother is mentally ill. As of now, we are stranded in Thika as we are supposed to clear the bill, so that he can be seen, and we can leave from Bungoma," said Dorcas.
Granny can't afford the money because she just takes care of someone's shamba and also has to care for her three children with mental illness. She can be helped through 0715257459.
