Brian Odhiambo's Family Arrested During Protests

The search for Brian Odhiambo, a 31-year-old fisherman who disappeared on January 18, 2025, continues to intensify, marked by family protests, brief arrests, and court orders demanding further investigation. Odhiambo's family alleges he was abducted by officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

On Saturday morning, family members, including Odhiambo’s wife, Alvy Okello, his mother, Elizabeth Auma, and his brothers, Carlos Otieno and John Omenge, were briefly arrested by police during a protest near Lake Nakuru National Park’s gate. According to Okello, the police accused them of leading protests against KWS officers, which they claimed was a punishable crime. Okello recounted that they were driven around in a police land cruiser, threatened with arraignment, but were eventually released following intervention from irate youths, residents, and a local MP who made phone calls on their behalf.

The family and residents were protesting the KWS's refusal to grant them access to the park. Auma stated that someone claimed to have seen a person resembling Odhiambo inside the park, but KWS officers denied them access to confirm. Auma expressed frustration that a search warrant, promised by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) since the previous Monday, had not been provided, preventing them from conducting a search within the park.

In a poignant display of desperation, Auma sat on the road leading to the park, pleading for her son’s release while facing armed KWS officers. The family later dispersed, awaiting further action.

The Nakuru Law Courts addressed the matter on Thursday, ordering the DCI and KWS to expand their investigations. The court has mandated that the file be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution for further action within 30 days, signaling a critical phase in the pursuit of justice and the search for Brian Odhiambo.
