THE Bank of Tanzania (BoT) has urged people to report any instances where prices are set or payments are made in foreign currency to the authorities or relevant state organs for appropriate action to be taken against those responsible.

Dominic Mwita, an economist from the Directorate of Research and Economic Policies, made these remarks in Mtwara on February 26, 2025, as he highlighted the importance of using the Tanzanian Shilling in economic activities within the country during a seminar for senior journalists.

He explained that the government, through the Ministry of Finance, has emphasized that starting from July 1, 2024, all payments and prices should be set and announced in Tanzanian Shillings.

Mwita clarified that before July 1, 2024, it was common to use foreign currencies, but the government has now made it clear that all transactions and price settings must be in Tanzanian Shillings.

“If you come across a place where prices are set in foreign currency, report it to the Bank of Tanzania or the relevant security authorities so that it can be addressed,” he said.

BoT continues to stress this as part of efforts to raise public awareness that this should not be the practice. “If you know of any business charging in foreign currency, report it,” he added.

According to Section 26 of the Bank of Tanzania Act of 2006, the Tanzanian Shilling is the only legal tender for domestic payments within the country.
