Boston Celtics’ Accomplished Do-It-All Star Draws Interest From Western Conference Contender, Per 1 Insider

The Boston Celtics may have to trade one of their stars this offseason to avoid punitive penalties associated with being in the second apron of the luxury tax, and Derrick White was floated as one of the potential trade candidates.

White is a key player for the Boston Celtics because of his solid two-way play. However, his new extension will kick in next season, where he’ll earn $28.1 million in his first year.

“Another guy for the Warriors to look at going forward is Derrick White. I think that’s something the Warriors are looking at right now. That’s somebody who can play defense, can settle everyone down, especially when you have a young group like that,” The Ringer’s Logan Murdoch said on The Zach Lowe Show.

“I’ve talked about how depressing trading Derrick White would be for Boston, and the sort of a dilemma they face in terms of, ‘How much of a reset do we really want to have and who we want to be back here when Tatum comes back?’” Lowe replied. “Who has trade value in the interim and where (does) Derrick White fit in that conversation?”

Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens is facing a summer filled with tough decisions because of the team’s complicated financial situation and Jayson Tatum’s Achilles’ injury. During his exit interview, Stevens said he hasn’t thought much about it since he hasn’t finished unpacking what happened this postseason.

“We talk big picture branches and long-term all the time. But then, at the end of each season, you glean a little more clarity from the season that just happened and what happened during it, right?” Stevens told reporters via Celtics on CLNS.

“So again, I like to give everybody a few days to take a deep breath, because you don’t want to make decisions that are rash or emotional. And we’ve got a lot to sift through and sort out and think about,” he added.
