Billy Berhalter leads Kings Park boys lacrosse to first county title

Published 1 week ago3 minute read

Kings Park senior Luke Griffin flung his helmet toward midfield seconds after senior Alex Wittneben and junior Nick Haggerty attempted to dump a cooler of ice water over coach Tom Nally’s head.

For the first time in program history, the Kingsmen are kings of the county.

No. 1 Kings Park won, 13-6, over No. 2 Bayport-Blue Point in the Suffolk Class C championship on Saturday. A monstrous second half saw Kings Park outscore the reigning state champions, 9-1.

“I went over to the guys and brought them into a huddle,” senior Billy Berhalter said. “I said, ‘You got 24 minutes and that’s it. If you don’t win, you’re going home.’ I told them I’d rather walk home than get on that bus losing.”

Berhalter was one of three Kingsmen — alongside fellow seniors Griffin and Jack Salva — to record three goals. Berhalter added two caused turnovers on the ride.

“It’s just surreal, playing with these guys since kindergarten," Berhalter said. "I think everyone had tears of joy just winning this one."

Goalie Nick Vicinanza and the Kings Park defense made life difficult on Bayport-Blue Point, matching the Phantoms’ physicality and hustle in the second half. Vicinanza made 18 saves, with 13 coming in the second half.

“Our effort, intensity commitment to each other, friendship,” Vicinanza said. “Every one of those traits combined, that makes us a county championship team going to the Long Island championship.”

Andrew Laviano — who has a “bulldog mentality,” according to Nally — won eight of 11 second-half faceoffs. Tied 5-5 at halftime, the junior gave Kings Park its first lead just eight seconds into the third quarter, winning the faceoff before flipping it to Berhalter for a quick score.

“He’s one of the best faceoff guys on the county,” Nally said. “He’s unselfishly given up [his offensive role] and some of the goals and assists that he would’ve had earlier in the season.”

Connor Curran, Dylan Craig and Jamison Hawkins scored two goals each for Bayport-Blue Point (14-4). Andrew Snyder made 14 saves.

Grit brought Kings Park (16-2) its first title and a date against Wantagh in the Long Island Class C championship game on Wednesday.

Plays like Aidan Kelly leaping to narrowly win possession in the fourth quarter after a wayward Phantom shot helped these Kingsmen do something no Kings Park boys lacrosse player had done before.

“You never think in 18 years of your life that you’d play in a county championship game surrounded by people that you love,” Berhalter said. “And we did it. It’s just insane.”
