There are many different reasons someone can be fired from their job. Tweeting about basketball while covering a basketball game is a new one.

Big3 commentator Rachel DeMita, who rose to fame on YouTube and NBA 2K TV, was reportedly fired after tweeting Caitlin Clark highlights during a game she was working. She had been with the league since last season.

The game in question occurred on February 13, when the Indiana Fever hosted defending the WNBA Champion New York Liberty. Caitlin Clark, who had missed five consecutive games, returned and set the basketball work ablaze when she drilled three consecutive deep three-point shots. The Fever took down the Liberty 102-88 in the Commisoner’s Cup game, but there was just one problem for DeMita.

While she was tweeting highlights of Clark’s stellar shots, she was supposed to be covering four week one Big3 games. The matchups consisted of Dwight Howard‘s LA Riot vs Michael Beasley‘s Miami 305, Corey Brewer‘s Houston Rig Hands vs Isaiah Briscoe‘s DMV Trilogy, Joe Johnson‘s Detroit Amps vs Jason Richardson‘s Chicago Triplets and Jonathon Simmons‘ Boston Ball Hogs vs Paul Millsap‘s Dallas Power.

According to frontofficesports.com, DeMita tweeting the Clark highlights were the “final straw.” However, a Big3 spokesperson declined to comment on the situation.

The Big3 basketball league was founded in 2017 by actor/rapper Ice Cube and tours arenas all around the country. The league consists of eight teams and features past NBA/college basketball players. The league takes place in the NBA’s offseason and seeks to fill the void, much like the United Football League tries to fill the league of the NFL.

“The country is very uneasy right now,” Ice Cube said in 2023. “Everybody got to do their part. The BIG3, we’re going from city to city this year. We’re not in our bubble like we have been in the last couple of years. We’re going to be all over the country this summer, hopefully making cities a little better than we found them when we leave. That’s our plan. I think it should be everybody’s plan. Everybody’s got to look in the mirror and say, ‘What can I do to make things better?’ That’s the only way it’s going to change.”

Firing DeMita over a tweet appears to be harsh, but it will represent just another move in her budding media career. She has over 278,000 followers on Twitter/X, 452,000 on TikTok, one million on Instagram and 362,000 YouTube subscribers.
