Benilde standouts Miguel Corteza, JC Cullar get PBA chance

Published 2 weeks ago2 minute read

A pair of former College of St. Benilde players were activated by their respective PBA teams in time for their Philippine Cup games at the Ynares Center in Montalban on Friday.

Blackwater listed rookie Miguel Corteza back to its active roster in time for a game against NLEX, while Phoenix signed up rookie free agent JC Cullar for its match against TNT.

Corteza and Cullar, the former St. Benilde team captain, were teammates in the Blazers side that finished runner-up to NCAA men’s basketball champion Letran Knights during Season 98.

The 27-year-old Corteza was reactivated after the Bossing placed Jaydee Tungcab on the injured/reserved list.

“It’s the first time this conference that he’s on the reserved list, but now he’s back in the active roster,” said Blackwater coach Jeff Cariaso. “But he’s been on the active roster the past two conferences.”

Originally selected by Rain or Shine in the second round of last season’s draft at N o. 20 overall, Corteza was traded to Blackwater for future second-round pick.

The Bossing currently carry a 1-2 record.

Meanwhile, Cullar found his way to the Phoenix Fuel Masters team after being signed to a contract in lieu of guard Kent Salado.

Ironically, the 5-foot-10 Fil-Italian guard was also a draft pick of Rain or Shine during the Season 48 draft in the fourth round (No. 39 overall), but failed to sign a contract with the franchise.

Salado, on the other hand, was relegated to the injured/reserved list, taking the place of big man Larry Muyang.
