Be Sure Not to Miss the Resident Evil Reference in Netflix's 'Devil May Cry'

Published 2 months ago3 minute read

Netflix’s new Devil May Cry offers a unique twist on the franchise’s lore by keeping some parts and significantly changing others to fit its own story. While a few fans are happy that the series isn’t reinventing the wheel, others couldn’t be more disappointed.

While the success it achieved by doing so is debatable, none can deny that the series admires the franchise just as much as the fans, as seen by the number of details and easter eggs included in it.

Among these references is one that may look like a typical Capcom nod at first, but on further inspection, it reveals its connection to the Devil May Cry series. So don’t miss it the next time you watch the series.

Adi Shankar, the creator of Netflix’s Devil May Cry, is a huge gaming nerd. He loves Capcom and the DMC franchise, and the effort he’s put into the new show is a testament to that. From its character designs to its dialogue, everything has been meticulously designed to please ardent fans of the series.

He’s so dedicated that he added many details and easter eggs referencing the series’ lore and other famous Capcom properties. These references range from silly cowboy hat dances to scenes from the DMC video games.

These references and callbacks pleased the fans, and they enjoyed searching for them in each episode. While all these easter eggs are fun callbacks, a reference to a fellow Capcom property suggests something exciting about the show’s universe.

We are, of course, referring to the Resident Evil reference from Episode 3. For context, in Episode 3, Dante (after he’s been captured) remarks that Enzo always seems to hand over the worst jobs to him. Following this, Enzo brings up the “Raccoon City job”, which cements Dante’s opinion.

This reference excited fans so much that they skipped over its deeper implications. This detail isn’t just a simple nod to Capcom’s properties, and one shouldn’t miss this detail the next time they watch the series.

Everyone knows the Resident Evil franchise either through the movies (terrible) or the games (lovable). The franchise focuses on a world rampaged with ‘Bio Organic Weapons’, and is one of Capcom’s most iconic properties.

While fans have long theorized that the series may share a universe with DMC because of Dante, these were mere speculations. Dante was supposed to appear in the fourth Resident Evil game as Tony Redgrave, but after seeing his potential, he was given his own game series.

This detail suggests that they may have been right. Another reference that adds to this theory is the name of Arius’ corporation: UROBOROS. For those unaware, Uroboros is a virus used to develop bio-weapons in the Resident Evil franchise.

Including these references seems to suggest that Adi Shankar may be planning to change the lore more than we expected, and fans are theorizing that the series might rewrite the canon by making it so that both franchises exist in the same universe.

While we do not know this for sure, it is exciting to theorize about such possibilities while we wait for the series to get renewed for a second season, which will hopefully expand on these details.

is available to stream on Netflix.
