President Tinubu Condemns Borno Suicide Bombing and Mourns Kano Explosion Victims

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed profound anguish and condemned two tragic incidents that occurred over the weekend: a suicide bombing in Konduga, Borno State, and an explosion in Kano. Through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described both events as cowardly, tragic, and avoidable, extending his deepest condolences to the families of the victims, as well as the governments and people of Borno and Kano States.

In Konduga, Borno State, a female suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) at a crowded fish market on Friday night. The attack resulted in the death of 12 people and left 18 others injured. The Borno State Police Command reported that the assailant infiltrated a group of civilians before triggering the device around 9:30 p.m. A joint response team, comprising personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, the Military, EOD-CBRN Unit, and other security agencies, was swiftly deployed to the scene to prevent further attacks and manage the emergency. President Tinubu described the attack as cowardly and strongly urged security agencies to intensify their efforts in routing out remnants of Boko Haram insurgents, whom he noted are resorting to targeting soft locations as a diversionary tactic.

Separately, on Saturday morning, an explosion at a scrap metal factory in the Brigade area of Kano State claimed five lives and injured 15 others. The State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, suggested that the blast might have involved a military-grade mortar bomb that was being improperly handled or transported by a trailer, allegedly originating from Yobe State. Preliminary findings indicate the explosive material was being transported, though it remains unclear whether the vehicle was carrying military personnel or contractors, with investigations ongoing. President Tinubu sympathized deeply with the victims and their families in Kano. He stressed the paramount importance of enforcing workplace safety measures and protocols, and tasked relevant government institutions with thoroughly investigating the incident to ensure accountability in the handling and movement of potentially dangerous materials, especially those of military-grade.

Furthermore, President Tinubu directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide immediate and comprehensive support to all survivors of both attacks, reinforcing his administration's commitment to assisting those affected by such unfortunate occurrences.
