Water samples collected across Bandera County in late June reveal dangerously high levels of E. coli bacteria in several locations, with 10 testing sites exceeding the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) threshold for safe recreational contact.
The Bandera County River Authority and Groundwater District (BCRAGD) released the results as part of its ongoing water quality monitoring program.
The data, taken from more than a dozen creeks, rivers, and lake access points, included E. coli counts, water levels, and temperatures.
The TCEQ considers 399 Most Probable Number (MPN) of E. coli per 100 milliliters of water to be the threshold for concern.
Among the highest readings were:
• Upstream WWTP Bandera at 1st Crossing on RM 337: >2,420 MPN
• Bandera River Ranch: 1,733 MPN
• Tarpley Crossing at West Verde CK @ FM 470: 1,300 MPN
• Can CK @ Lost Maples SNA: 1,414 MPN
• Sabinal River at SH 187: 1,553 MPN
• Sabinal River at Hwy 16: 1,300 MPN “These numbers suggest an increased risk for recreational users,” said a representative of BCRAGD. “We encourage residents and visitors to avoid fullbody contact with water at sites showing elevated levels.”
Some sites, such as Medina Lake at Red Cove Marina and Pop’s Place, as well as Bandera Creek at SH 16 S, were not accessible for sampling.
One site, English Crossing, recorded 73 MPN, which remains below the TCEQ threshold.
Others such as the Lower Mason Creek at Chipman measured 28 MPN, and the N. Prong atRocky Creek Crossing reported just 2 MPN.
