Austin Brown, Son of Rebbie Jackson, Follows Family into Music Industry

Entering the music industry can be a formidable challenge, especially when your lineage includes iconic figures like Janet Jackson and Michael Jackson as your aunt and uncle, your mother is Rebbie Jackson, and your other uncles form the legendary Jackson 5. For musician Austin Brown, this reality presented what he describes as a potential "double-edged sword." However, when asked why he chose this path, Brown explained to CNN that his decision wasn't primarily driven by the towering artistic achievements of his family. "It was more so just, music is tough," he stated. "It is just tough, tough, tough, tough. But for me, there wasn’t any other way. It makes me feel good about expressing myself."
Brown, an independent artist, recently released "The Festival" album with his band BLVK CVSTLE. For years, he has dedicated himself to his art, viewing it as a crucial medium for emotional expression. His early musical memories include being captivated by Stevie Wonder’s 1985 hit “Overjoyed,” released the year he was born, and his mother's song “Centipede.” Beyond specific tracks, Brown emphasizes learning from his mother's example. "My mom went through a lot in the music industry," he shared. "She went through just a lot of things, mentally and spiritually, just how tough it could be. And my mom always kept a good, balanced head on her shoulders."
The influence of his father, Nathaniel Brown, a hardworking business owner, also played a significant role in shaping his work ethic. "I saw that example every day," Austin Brown remarked. He candidly addressed common misconceptions about his upbringing, laughing as he said, "You know, I didn’t grow up the way people might’ve thought I did. And so when they get around me and they’re like ‘Yo, you went through the same stuff I went through,’ I’m like, ‘It’s no difference, bro.’” Brown has navigated the same obstacles faced by any emerging artist, dedicating years to songwriting, performing live, and diligently working to get his music heard.
His persistence is evident in his recent activities, which include headlining a residency at singer Anderson .Paak’s restaurant in Los Angeles. Brown continues to ride the momentum of his new music while simultaneously writing more. Despite his deep passion for music, he finds profound joy in simple family moments. He cherishes playing board games with his 95-year-old grandmother, Katherine Jackson. "I’m blessed that she’s still here and I get to have those moments with her," he said. "Especially when it’s me, her, and my mom playing. I cherish those moments big time."
Family remains paramount for Brown. He also shared his excitement about the forthcoming Michael Jackson biopic, in which his cousin Jaafar Jackson portrays their legendary uncle. Having seen a screen test, Brown offered high praise: "It was emotional how great he was. He’s gonna blow people’s minds." Austin Brown's album, "The Festival," is currently available for streaming.
