Assam braces for heavy rain, showers likely in city today

Guwahati: While a brief spell of rainfall lashed the western outskirts of Guwahati in Kamrup on Saturday, the Regional Meteorological Centre of IMD has issued a heavy rainfall alert at isolated places in Assam in the next couple of days.

This could mark the beginning of monsoon rains in the state.The Met office issued a forecast of a partly cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers on Sunday in Guwahati and its neighbourhood.In the last 24 hours, from 8:30 am on Friday to 8:30 am on Saturday, in Assam, only Darrang district received extremely heavy rainfall, with a departure of 61% beyond normal. Among locations in the northeast, Lakhipur in south Assam received the highest rainfall of 11 cm during this period.In Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district, bordering Kamrup (Metro) district, excess rainfall was recorded in the last 24 hours. During this period in Arunachal Pradesh, West Kameng, Lower Subansiri, Anjaw and Changlang districts experienced normal rainfall, whereas Upper Subansiri district received excess rainfall.In Mizoram, Champhai district has experienced normal rainfall in the last 24 hours since 8:30 am on Friday, whereas Kolasib district experienced excess rainfall.

In Manipur, during the period, Tamenglong and Bishnupur districts received large excess rainfall, Imphal East and Ukhrul received excess rainfall, whereas Imphal West experienced normal rainfall. In Nagaland, Kiphire district recorded large excess rainfall in the last 24 hours, whereas none of the districts in Tripura recorded even normal rainfall during the period.As monsoon onset has been declared in the northeast on Saturday, and there is likelihood of further advancement in the region in the next two to three days, RMC has issued a warning of thunderstorm and lightning accompanied with gusty winds reaching up to 30-40 kmph as very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam, Manipur and Mizoram on Sunday. The Met office has warned that thunderstorm and lightning is very likely to occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura on Sunday. Further, the Met office has predicted that heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Manipur on Sunday.
