Applicants can now collect Ghana Cards from district offices by April 7

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced the commencement of an exercise aimed at clearing the backlog of Ghana Cards that have been printed but are yet to be received by applicants. This initiative, starting on April 7, 2025, seeks to ensure that all eligible Ghanaians are registered and issued with the Ghana Card, which serves as the country’s primary form of identification.

According to a statement issued by the NIA on Monday, April 7, 2025, applicants who have been waiting since June 2023 are assured that the card issuance process has officially resumed. The statement, signed by Williams Darlas, acting Head of the Corporate Affairs Directorate of the NIA, indicates that the issuance of Ghana Cards will begin at the respective District Offices where applicants registered.

The NIA is also encouraging all unregistered Ghanaians aged 15 years and above to take advantage of this opportunity by visiting any NIA District Office within Greater Accra for first-time registration. The Authority has emphasized that the issuance of printed backlog Ghana Cards and first-time issuance (new registrations) at all NIA District Offices are free of charge.

Yayra Koku, the Acting Executive Secretary of the NIA, stated that all districts have been provided with enough blank cards to print cards for new applicants for free, except for replacements and updates, for which applicants are required to pay GH¢125 and GH¢60, respectively. He also mentioned that all regions, except Volta and Oti, have received sufficient cards to print all backlogs.

The NIA has urged the public to report any NIA staff who demands a fee in exchange for these services. The Authority has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all Ghanaians possess the Ghana Card for identification purposes.

In summary, the NIA is actively working to clear the backlog of Ghana Cards and encourages all eligible Ghanaians to register and obtain their cards. The issuance of printed backlog cards and first-time registrations are free of charge, and the public is urged to report any instances of fee demands by NIA staff.
