Interpol Issues Red Notice for Ghana's Ken Ofori-Atta Alleging Misuse of Public Office

Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana's former finance minister, has been formally added to INTERPOL's Red Notice database following a reiterated request from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). This development is part of ongoing corruption investigations and aims to facilitate efforts to bring the former minister to justice. The charge listed against Ofori-Atta by INTERPOL is "Using Public Office for Profit."
The Red Notice, issued on June 6, 2025, provides details about Mr. Ofori-Atta: a 65-year-old Ghanaian male, born in Accra on November 7, 1959. He is described as being 1.7 meters tall, with dark eyes and hair, and speaks Twi and English. The OSP is actively seeking international cooperation to locate and provisionally arrest him, pending extradition or his voluntary surrender, as they believe he is currently in the United States for medical treatment.
Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng announced on June 2, 2025, that his office had initiated the procedures for the INTERPOL Red Notice shortly before his public statement. This action followed Ofori-Atta's failure to appear for a scheduled interrogation on June 2, which led the OSP to re-declare him a wanted individual. This marks the second instance of the OSP declaring Mr. Ofori-Atta wanted; he was previously labeled a "fugitive from justice" in February 2025 for not attending an investigation related to other high-profile corruption cases, including matters concerning a revenue assurance agreement with Strategic Mobilization Ghana Ltd (SML) and the contentious National Cathedral project.
Mr. Ofori-Atta is under investigation for his alleged involvement in several significant cases. These include: contractual arrangements between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) regarding petroleum and minerals revenue assurance; the termination of a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana and Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC); procurement procedures and financial transactions related to the construction of the National Cathedral; a Ministry of Health contract with Service Ghana Auto Group Limited for the purchase and maintenance of 307 ambulances; and the handling and disbursement of funds from the GRA’s Tax P-Fund Account.
