Apple to Open AI Models to Developers

Apple Inc. is set to broaden its artificial intelligence capabilities by allowing third-party developers to create software using its AI models. According to a Bloomberg News report, Apple is developing a software development kit (SDK) and related frameworks to enable developers to integrate Apple Intelligence features into their applications. This initiative aims to enhance the creation of new applications and boost Apple's competitive stance in the AI landscape, particularly against rivals like Samsung Electronics and Google.
The SDK will allow developers to build AI features based on the large language models used by Apple Intelligence, which includes features such as rewriting emails, summarizing notifications, and editing photos. These AI features were initially rolled out last year. Apple is expected to unveil this plan at its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 9.
By opening up its AI models, Apple intends to enable developers to integrate the underlying AI technology into specific features or across their entire applications. Initially, Apple will focus on opening up its smaller models that run on its devices, rather than the more advanced cloud-based AI models that require servers.
This move is seen as a strategy to help Apple compete more effectively in the AI arena, where some analysts view it as lagging behind competitors like Samsung Electronics, which have enhanced their devices with AI-powered features from companies like Google. The initiative could also increase the appeal of Apple Intelligence among both developers and users, especially after a roll-out that faced some delays.
Currently, developers can integrate Apple's existing AI technology into their applications but have been unable to use Apple's AI models to develop and power their own AI features. The new SDK aims to change this, providing developers with greater access to Apple's AI capabilities.
