Amprion Sees Record Growth in 2024 and Plans Major Grid Expansion

Published 1 week ago3 minute read

Amprion, a major German transmission grid operator, reported a successful 2024 marked by significant advancements in grid expansion and strong financial performance. The company invested approximately €4 billion in expanding its transmission grid and plans to invest €36.4 billion by 2029. These investments aim to enhance grid capacity for renewable energy and reduce reliance on expensive grid interventions.

Key Achievements in 2024

Amprion has significantly accelerated grid expansion, managing 800 projects, many of which are now under construction. In 2024, the company completed 200 kilometers of transmission lines, setting a new record. An additional 1,300 kilometers are currently under construction, a threefold increase from the previous year. These expansions are crucial for meeting climate targets and reducing electricity costs for consumers.

The company commissioned the world’s largest phase shifter at the Lingen substation, designed to efficiently distribute large volumes of wind power. Lingen is set to become Germany’s most powerful grid network node by 2029.

Focus on Affordable Energy Transition

Amprion emphasizes the importance of an affordable energy transition to maintain social acceptance. CEO Dr. Christoph Müller calls for more flexible grid planning, focusing on the electricity grid required by 2035. Amprion advocates for reassessing long-term grid expansion projects to potentially save billions for grid customers.

The company also seeks legally binding regulations for climate-neutral technologies, particularly photovoltaic systems and battery storage. These systems should respond to price signals and be controllable by grid operators. Müller emphasized that grid-friendly systems must be prepared to forego market earnings to ensure electricity network stability.

Strong Business Performance

Amprion’s operational achievements are reflected in its strong financial performance in 2024. Revenue rose by 16.7% to €5.6 billion, and adjusted EBITDA increased by 25.1% to €1.2 billion. Adjusted consolidated net income grew by 21.2% to €390 million. The regulated asset base (RAB) increased by 39.5% to €11.7 billion, supporting future earnings growth.

The company expanded its workforce by hiring 368 new employees, bringing the total to around 3,100, a 14% increase from the previous year.

Financial Stability and Future Plans

CFO Peter Rüth highlighted the company's excellent financial performance and focus on affordability. Shareholders contributed €850 million in equity by the end of 2024, with additional equity contributions assured for the current year. Amprion plans investments of €36.4 billion up to 2029.

Rüth also called for adapting the German regulatory framework to international standards to support the energy transition. He emphasized the importance of an internationally competitive pre-tax return on equity of 9% for all investments.

Amprion’s Role

Amprion GmbH is one of Germany's four transmission system operators, managing an 11,000-kilometer extra-high voltage grid. The grid supports one-third of Germany's economic output and secures jobs and quality of life for 29 million people. The company employs around 3,100 people across more than 30 locations.
