Nearly 30 years after the original (and iconic) movie came out in 1995, new life has been breathed into Clueless. News broke yesterday that there will be a sequel series headed to Peacock starring Alicia Silverstone, whose career was catapulted to new heights after she played the lead role of fashion-forward Cher Horowitz in the film.

Silverstone—whose fashion in Clueless set the tone for the mid-1990s—reacted on Instagram on April 17, the same day word got out about the series. “Totally buggin’...in the best way,” she wrote, alluding to one of the movie’s signature lines.

While plot details are unknown, Variety reported that it is a follow-up to the film and that it will be written by Freakier Friday’s Jordan Weiss and Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. Amy Heckerling, who directed the 1995 movie, will serve as an executive producer on the project, as will Silverstone, per People.

This isn’t the first time that a Clueless revival has been attempted. In 2020, Peacock attempted to reboot Clueless, but People reported that the 2025 project is “completely separate” from that effort, which was set to focus on Dionne Davenport, the character played by Stacey Dash in the film.

Clueless, which was loosely inspired by Jane Austen’s 1815 novel Emma and became a cult classic, also included a star-studded cast featuring Paul Rudd, Brittany Murphy, Donald Faison, and Breckin Meyer. In the aftermath of the movie’s success, a sitcom starring Rachel Blanchard as Cher aired from 1996 to 1999, and Silverstone reprised her role as the lead character—albeit briefly—in Rakuten’s 2023 Super Bowl commercial.

As for how Cher and Clueless changed her life, Silverstone told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023 that “when Clueless came out, [my life] really shifted.” But Silverstone told Vogue in 2020 that she initially didn’t love the character of Cher, telling the publication, “I found Cher on the page to be materialistic and unappealing. And really annoying, to be honest. Just everything I sort of loathed. But I realized that was just me judging her, and once I started working on her I found all the heart and all the love.”

“I just sorta put all of my love and heart into this character with these other aspects that were cringeworthy,” she added.
