During a recent interview on Oga Obinna TV, Kenneth Ouma, the family spokesperson, and John Okwanyo, the chairman of Albert's funeral committee, opened up about the emotional turmoil they have been quietly battling away from the public eye.

Responding to recent claims that over KSh 500,000 raised for Albert’s send-off had mysteriously disappeared, the two explained why Albert’s father, Meshack Opiyo, has not been seen publicly addressing the issue.

According to Okwanyo, speculation had begun circulating that Opiyo had misused the donations.

However, he firmly dismissed those claims, stating that the funds remained untouched until scammers gained access to the account.

“The money has not been misused or even used. We could have had other problems and used the money, but until now, the money is intact," Okwanyo clarified.

He went on to explain that Opiyo and his family have been overwhelmed with grief and are also dealing with a second personal loss.

“Anybody thinking he spent the people's money badly or that he forgot about Albert is wrong. We are grieving. Baba Albert had just attended the funeral of Albert’s aunt, who passed away after hearing of Albert’s death. That is why he went home, it has been grieving after grieving," he explained.

Albert died under unclear circumstances shortly after being arrested at his home while having lunch with his family.

It later emerged that he died while in police custody, sparking widespread outrage across social media.

His death triggered an outpouring of support from Kenyans, who not only demanded justice but also contributed generously to help the family manage funeral expenses.

In the same breath, following reports that Albert's father had mysteriously lost over KSh 500,000, the family moved to set the record straight.

During the interview, family spokesperson Kenneth Ouma explained that Albert’s father had misplaced his national ID while at City Mortuary in Nairobi.

He was later unable to access M-Pesa services, only to later discover that his SIM card had been swapped.

According to Ouma, Safaricom informed them that someone close to them had either fraudulently swapped the SIM or accessed the M-Pesa through the app, taking full control and initiating unauthorised withdrawals.
