Albert Ojwang Murder Case Developments in Kenya

The family of slain blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang has officially announced his burial date for Friday, July 4, 2025, following a requiem mass scheduled for Wednesday, July 2, in Nairobi, with the specific venue to be confirmed. The burial itself will take place in Kakoth Village, Kokwanyo Location, Rachuonyo East Sub-county, Homa Bay county, near Nyawango Primary or Junior/Senior Schools. John Okwanyo, a nephew of the deceased, urged Kenyans, especially the Gen Z community, to mark these dates and attend, emphasizing the family's desire for public support during this difficult farewell.

The family has successfully raised KSh 5.6 million in contributions for the funeral, including significant donations from President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga. They have clarified that Ojwang’s father, Meshack Opiyo, has not accessed these funds and all contributions remain untouched. Activist Hanifa Adan, along with Okwanyo, outlined a provisional funeral budget of around KSh 4.5 million, prepared to host approximately 3,000 mourners, providing refreshments and covering various expenses like the requiem mass, transport, security, floral decorations, and hearse services. Logistics regarding the transportation of Ojwang's body, whether by road or air to Homa Bay, are still being finalized. The family has also appealed for sensitivity and restraint when approaching Ojwang’s grieving father.

However, a distressing development has added to the family's grief, as Ojwang’s uncle, Polycarp Odhiambo, revealed that over KSh 500,000, along with KSh 17,000 of the father's personal savings, was fraudulently withdrawn. This theft occurred when Ojwang’s father attempted to access funeral funds and discovered the anomaly through Safaricom. The stolen money was specifically raised through the 'Sisi kwa Sisi' initiative led by comedian Eric Omondi.

Albert Ojwang, 31, a prominent blogger and teacher, was brutally beaten to death while in police custody at the Nairobi Central Station on June 7, hours after his arrest at his Kokwanyo home in Homa Bay county. This tragedy initially led the family to vow not to bury him until justice was served, sparking widespread public outcry and calls for an end to police brutality. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) subsequently approved murder charges against six individuals in connection with Ojwang’s death.

The six accused are Central Police Station OCS Samson Kiprotich Talaam, Police Constable James Mukhwana, Peter Kimani, John Ngige Gitau, Gin Ammitou Abwao, and Brian Mwaniki Njue. These suspects appeared before Lady Justice Diana Kavedza on Tuesday, June 24, at Kibera Law Court to be formally charged. The plea hearing was initially postponed as two of the suspects, Gitau and Kimani, lacked legal representation. When pleas were eventually taken, all six suspects denied planning and committing the murder of the popular blogger in a cell at the Central Police Station.

During the court proceedings, defence lawyer Danstan Omari applied for bail, arguing that their clients were not a flight risk. However, the prosecution, led by State Counsel Victor Owiti, vehemently opposed the bail application, citing compelling reasons. The prosecution argued that granting bail would likely lead to interference with witnesses and ongoing investigations, given that the accused officers are active members of the police service with operational knowledge, access to firearms, and influence over internal police systems. They also noted the capital nature of the offence, which carries the death penalty, and warned that releasing the suspects could fuel further public unrest and threaten public peace, given the widespread outrage following Ojwang’s death.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) also addressed reports linking Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat to Ojwang’s murder, particularly after Inspector General Douglas Kana disclosed that Lagat’s complaint to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had led to Ojwang's arrest. Social media reports emerged claiming that IPOA had cleared Lagat of any wrongdoing in Ojwang's murder. However, IPOA swiftly denied these claims, stating unequivocally, "No. IPOA has not issued such a statement."
