The Mumbai unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) recently arrested an Air India crew member for attempting to smuggle 1.373 kg of gold into India. The gold, which was valued at approximately ₹1.41 crore, was concealed and transported from the United States to India. This gold smuggling arrest comes as part of ongoing efforts to expose and dismantle smuggling syndicates using airline staff to carry illicit goods across borders.

The DRI operation, which led to the arrest, was triggered by intelligence reports indicating that certain smuggling networks were enlisting airline crew members to illegally transport gold from the US to India. On the day of the arrest, the Air India crew member had just disembarked from a flight arriving at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) from New York.

During further interrogation, the arrested individual admitted to smuggling gold into India on prior occasions, establishing a pattern of illicit activity.
