Air India Crash: Over 240 Fatalities, Rescue Efforts, and Survivor Stories

On Thursday, a devastating aviation tragedy struck India as Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner carrying 242 individuals, crashed into a residential area in Ahmedabad shortly after taking off. The flight was bound for London Gatwick airport from Ahmedabad. The catastrophic accident resulted in the deaths of over 240 people onboard, alongside 24 individuals on the ground, as the plane plummeted into a medical college hostel during lunchtime. Of the 242 people on the flight, which included 169 Indians, 53 Britons, 7 Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian, only a single passenger survived the harrowing ordeal.

The sole survivor was identified as Viswash Kumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old British citizen of Indian origin. Mr. Ramesh, who was seated in row 11A next to an emergency exit, recounted the terrifying moments before the crash, stating that the lights onboard began to flicker just seconds after takeoff. He attributed his miraculous escape to his proximity to the exit, which allowed him to “come out” of the wreckage, where he witnessed unimaginable destruction and loss of life, including that of air hostesses and fellow passengers. His brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh, 45, who was seated beside him, remains unaccounted for, adding to the family's devastation. Another brother, Nayan Ramesh, 27, expressed shock, while Viswash himself remarked, “I don’t know how I’m alive.”

Among the many lives tragically cut short was Khushboo Rajpurohit, a 21-year-old Indian bride who was en route to London to meet her husband for the first time since their wedding in January. Her last photo, taken with her father at the airport just moments before boarding, has circulated widely, symbolizing the profound personal tragedies inflicted by the crash. Public reactions underscored the heart-wrenching stories behind each lost life, with condolences pouring in from various quarters.

Information about the flight's pilot, Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, has also come to light, revealing him to be a veteran aviator with nearly 30 years of experience and over 8,200 hours logged in the cockpit. His colleagues described him as a quiet, diligent man who performed his duties with great care, highlighting his death as a significant loss. Captain Sabharwal, aged 54, was part of the nine Mumbai-based crew members onboard and had reportedly called his family from the airport, promising to call them again upon landing in London. He had also planned to take leave to spend time with his 82-year-old father, a former official of India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The immediate aftermath saw rescue workers tirelessly searching through charred buildings in Ahmedabad for missing persons, bodies, and crucial aircraft debris. Indian police official Vishakha Dabral confirmed that 269 bodies had been taken to the main hospital, noting that the exact death toll would require time and DNA testing for accurate determination. Investigators have since recovered one of the two black boxes from the Boeing 787, which is expected to provide vital clues into the cause of the disaster. This incident marks the first crash ever for a Boeing 787 aircraft, according to the Aviation Safety Network database. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, a widebody twin-engine aircraft, has seen over 1,000 units delivered worldwide since its introduction in 2009. The specific aircraft involved in the crash was delivered to Air India in January 2014, having first flown in 2013. The Indian government is considering grounding the airline’s entire 787 fleet for safety checks amidst ongoing questions about the aircraft’s safety.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation extended its condolences to the government and people of India following the tragic event. The public outcry for accountability and a thorough investigation has been significant, with many urging that those responsible for any potential faults be held to the highest sanctions. The profound impact of the crash on numerous families underscores the unpredictability of life and the collective grief felt across nations.
