Ahanta West MP partners GES to introduce Ahanta language in schools

The Member of Parliament for Ahanta West constituency in the Western Region, Mavis Kuukua Bissue, has announced a partnership with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to introduce the teaching and learning of the Ahanta language in schools within her constituency.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday, July 2, the MP expressed concern over the growing preference for the English language among children in the area, which she says is contributing to the erosion of the Ahanta cultural identity.

She emphasised that the initiative is aimed at preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Ahanta people by encouraging the younger generation to learn and speak their native language.

“We want to teach Ahanta in schools. I have engaged GES, Bible translators, and other people who have been able to put the vowels and consonants together. We have also trained some teachers, and hopefully, very soon, the language is going to be taught in schools.

“I am still pushing at the top, engaging with the Minister of Education so that we can include it in the curriculum. Most children want to speak English, and even parents want to speak English to their children, forgetting that it is not our language. We should train up a child in the way they should go, starting with our native language,” she said.
