Agusan Del Sur Travel Guide

Published 13 hours ago5 minute read

Agusan Del Sur is one of the up-and-coming tourist destinations in the Philippines. Being the only landlocked province in the Caraga Region, the province has plenty of wonders that not every traveler knows about. It is located in Northern Mindanao bordered by Misamis Oriental and Agusan Del Norte to the Northwest, Surigao Del Sur to the East, Davao Oriental to the Southeast, Davao Del Norte and Bukidnon to the Southwest, and Davao De Oro to the South.

With its nickname, the “Land of Golden Opportunities,” Agusan Del Sur is a very large province rich in agricultural lands and various natural resources. The GPS coordinates of Agusan Del Sur is 8.0464° N, 126.0615° E.

When I visited Agusan Del Sur, it is my 70th province in my personal quest for #Project82PH. The province is very laid back and the atmosphere reminds me of my home province – simple living yet full of energy.

Agusan Del Sur generally has two seasons, the Wet Season (June to October) and the Dry Season (November to mid-May). The dry season is the best time to visit the province as the climate is warm and humid, but some natural attractions (e.g. waterfalls or the wetlands) may be dried up due to the warm weather. The average temperature ranges from 25 to 32 °C (77 to 90 °F) all year round and can get very humid during the dry season.

Sinuglaw – this staple dish found in Agusan Del Sur is a combination of sinugba (grilled meat) and sinanglaw (raw fish ‘cooked’ in citrus or vinegar). This gives the dish a distinct smokey and tangy taste when eaten.

Binaga or “grilled mudfish” – is the main star especially during the Naliyagan Festival celebrated every June. The mudfish is a freshwater fish abundantly found in Agusan Marsh.

Kiping – this typical Mindanao delicacy is a crispy rice wafer made of rice flour, coconut milk, and sugar. I first tasted this delicacy when I first visited Siargao Island in 2022 and it also has several variations.

Agusan Del Sur is quite a laidback province for me. The calm street even in busy hours is just normal and not that hectic. You can go around the city by foot, too. The main public transportation vehicles here in Agusan Del Sur are tricycles and baobao (tuktuk). The minimum fare for Tricycles and Baobaos is ₱ 15-20 minimum for short distances up to 4 kilometers and increase in increments depending on the distance of the destination. Buses are also popular for long-distance, interprovincial travel. Minimum fare for buses is around ₱ 40-50.
