African Music Instrument Studies Podcast Launched

The Africa Music Library (AML), a non-governmental music collective dedicated to the archiving, preservation, and study of African music, has launched a podcast series on African music instruments. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between older and newer generations of African musicians, fostering the development of the continent’s music industry.

Titled ‘Africa Music Studies Podcast’, the series comprises three parts, each focusing on traditional African music instruments. The first episode delves into the Oja, an aerophone instrument from south-eastern Nigeria. It explores the Oja's cultural significance among the Igbo people, emphasizing its crucial role in ceremonies and communication.

The second episode centers on the Mbira, a xylophone-like instrument of the Shona tribe of Zimbabwe. Fusion musician, Aliddeki Brian, and Conservation Advocate, Muhamago, host this episode, aiming to unravel the enduring magic of the Mbira, offering listeners insights into the instrument's cultural importance and musical characteristics.

In the third and final episode, ‘The Mbira II’, performing artiste and ethnomusicologist, Othnell Manngoma Moyo, provides an in-depth exploration of the Mbira’s history, significance, types, and sound. This episode offers a deeper understanding of the instrument's multifaceted nature.

The podcast series is accessible through the Africa Music Library app, and a link to the podcast is also included in the weekly subscriber email sent to AML community members. This initiative ensures that a wide audience can access and benefit from the rich musical knowledge shared within the podcast.
