Adelphi Men's Lacrosse Wins National Championship
Kyle Lewis of Adelphi, often encouraged by his coaches to take more shots, scored the game-winning goal in overtime against Tampa in the Division II national championship, securing a 9-8 victory. Adelphi won their second straight title and ninth overall. The coaches, despite admiring Lewis's passion and film study habits, had been pushing him to be less unselfish and capitalize on scoring opportunities.
Lewis's decisive shot, a sidearmed strike, came 1:19 into overtime after he dodged to his right. He explained that he aimed low to high, anticipating the goalie's movement. Coach Gordon Purdie noted Lewis's ability to exploit any advantage. Lewis mentioned this was the first time he'd ever scored an overtime walk-off goal, but he was briefly overwhelmed by the celebratory dogpile.
The game was nearly decided in regulation when Tampa’s Zack Friend shot at the open net, but Tampa called a timeout before the shot, nullifying the goal. Adelphi goalie Dylan Renner, who made 14 saves, saw the timeout as a sign of divine intervention. In overtime, after Tampa almost secured the faceoff, a check by Ryan Durnin forced a turnover. Vincent McDermott's near miss set up Lewis's winning shot.
The overtime faceoff was taken by Will Grieves because Michael Hendrickson, Adelphi's best player at that task, was unable to square off because of a previous violation. McDermott, who had four goals in his best game since transferring to Adelphi from Hofstra, barely missed the upper right corner but set up a restart behind the cage that led to Lewis’ game-winner. Coach Purdie described the winning play as unforgettable.
