Adelphi begins NCAA Tournament with drubbing of Georgian Court

Gordon Purdie was pleased. But not satisfied.

“It does not feel that way,” the Adelphi coach  said when asked if his team had put forth its best performance of the season. The No. 1 see Panthers routed eighth-seeded Georgian Court, 23-9, in the NCAA men’s Division II north regional tournament first round at Motamed Field Wednesday afternoon.

“There were some mistakes that we made on the defensive side of the ball that needed to improve,” Purdie said.

Tough grader.

Especially when considering 10 Panthers recorded at least one goal in the rout, led by Vincent McDermott, Michael Durnin, and Noah Gibson who each scored four goals. Thirteen Panthers recorded at least one point, led by Kyle Lewis’ 13. And goalkeeper Dylan Renner stopped 9 of 18 shots.

The Panthers (16-1) will host fifth-seeded Molloy Sunday afternoon in a second-round contest. The Lions defeated the Setters, 15-14, in overtime Wednesday.

The matinee will be the first time this season that Adelphi and Molloy (16-4) meet.

“They’re a good program,” Purdie said.

Wednesday’s contest marked the second time this season that the Panthers and Georgian Court (12-7) met. Adelphi blew out the Lions, 19-6, on Feb. 11 at Lakewood, New Jersey, in the regular-season opener for both.

Eighty-five days later, precious little had changed.

The defending national champions led 13-0 after the first quarter and enjoyed a 20-3 advantage in shots in the opening 15 minutes. Durnin recorded a hat trick. Gibson added two goals, and McDermott, Lewis, Ries Bower, William Greaves, Ryan Durnin, Danny Fisenne, Gavin Herzog, and Braden Donnellan each scored once.

As the quarter evolved, two things became abundantly clear: The Panthers’ ball-and-players movement in the attacking zone was not going to be neutralized by Georgian Court. Neither would Adelphi’s transition game.

“Moving together. Moving the ball,” Lewis said. “Playing for the team and as a team offense, that’s key for us.”

Gibson’s hat trick goal 3:59 into the second quarter stretched the lead to 14-0. Even though there was 41:01 spanning the second, third, and fourth quarter that the outcome had been essentially decided.

Adelphi spent the final two quarters taking time off the clock.

Matt Dorrian recorded a hat trick for the Lions. Sanford and Doug Mackenzie each scored twice, while Brett Bridges and Neil Spira each added a goal. Vincent Burkhart, who allowed all 23 Adelphi goals, finished with 10 saves.

The start of the game was delayed an hour because Georgian Court was involved in a bus accident near Adelphi’s campus.

“We were about 10 minutes away and the bus just unfortunately hit a tree and broke four panes of glass in the back,” Georgian Court coach Mickey Hover said.
